Important: A material specification defines product requirements; a dimensional standard defines outside diameters and wall designations. For example, ASTM A106 Grade B describes seamless carbon steel pipe material and testing, while ASME B36.10M supplies commonly used NPS and schedule dimensions. Dimensional caution: NPS and DN are nominal designations, not measured pipe outside diameters. Schedule is a wall-thickness designation, not a pressure rating. Stainless “S” schedules under ASME B36.19M can differ from ASME B36.10M values at selected sizes. Never calculate purchasing dimensions from DN alone.
Large-Diameter Seamless Steel Pipe
Large-diameter seamless steel pipe can be supplied only when the selected material specification, dimensions, wall thickness, delivery condition, quantity and inspection requirements match an available manufacturing route. ASTM A106 covers seamless carbon steel pipe through NPS 48 within its specification scope, but this published scope does not guarantee that every grade, wall thickness or length is commercially available from every mill.

For large diameters, send the exact OD or NPS, minimum or nominal wall basis, length, quantity, material grade, design code, pressure, temperature, medium, dimensional tolerances and NDE requirements. If a seamless route is unavailable, a welded pipe such as EFW, SAW or another approved construction may be technically and commercially appropriate—but only when the project specification and engineer permit that substitution.
Pipe Schedule, Wall Thickness and Pressure
A higher schedule normally means a thicker wall at the same NPS, but SCH 40, SCH 80 or SCH 160 is not a pressure class. The allowable pressure of a pipe must be determined using the applicable piping code and design conditions. Important variables include:
- Actual outside diameter and actual or minimum required wall thickness.
- Material grade, allowable stress and delivery heat treatment.
- Design pressure and design temperature.
- Corrosion, erosion and mechanical allowances.
- Mill tolerance and any thinning caused by bending or forming.
- Weld joint, threaded end, flange, fitting, valve and gasket limitations.

Seamless construction by itself does not create a universal pressure rating. A code-compliant welded pipe can be suitable for many demanding services, while an incorrectly specified seamless pipe can be unsafe. Always order to a complete material standard and piping design basis.
Carbon Steel Seamless Pipe
ASTM A106 Grade B seamless steel pipe is a common selection for high-temperature carbon steel piping. It is frequently used for steam, condensate, refinery utilities, power-plant piping and industrial process systems when accepted by the governing piping code. ASTM A53 Type S can be selected for applicable general piping services, while API 5L SMLS line pipe is used for pipeline transportation systems when the API specification and project requirements apply.
Carbon steel is not inherently corrosion resistant. Internal and external corrosion must be evaluated from water chemistry, oxygen, humidity, soil, chemicals, temperature and operating conditions. Coating, lining, corrosion allowance or material upgrading may be necessary.
Alloy Steel Seamless Pipe
ASTM A335 seamless alloy steel pipe includes ferritic alloy grades used in elevated-temperature service. Common inquiries include P5, P9, P11, P22 and P91. These grades are not interchangeable. Chemistry, heat treatment, hardness, creep properties, welding consumables, preheat, post-weld heat treatment and service temperature must be controlled according to the selected grade and project procedure.
For P11, P22, P91 and other alloy grades, provide the complete grade, wall basis, heat-treatment requirement, hardness limits, NDE, PMI and any supplementary requirements before quotation.
Stainless Steel Seamless Pipe
ASTM A312 seamless stainless steel pipe is available in common austenitic grades such as TP304/304L, TP316/316L, TP321 and TP310S, subject to size and mill availability. Stainless steel selection must be based on the real medium, temperature, chloride concentration, pH, cleaning chemicals, crevice conditions and fabrication process.
- TP304/304L: general stainless piping where its corrosion resistance is suitable.
- TP316/316L: molybdenum-bearing grade often evaluated for improved resistance in selected chloride and chemical environments.
- TP321: stabilized stainless grade used in selected elevated-temperature services.

ASTM A333 Grade 6 and other low-temperature grades are used where notch toughness is required at specified sub-zero temperatures. ASTM A333 permits seamless and welded routes, so the order must state SMLS when seamless construction is mandatory. The minimum design-metal temperature, impact-test temperature, pipe thickness, heat treatment and applicable piping code must be confirmed.
Manufacturing Process

Surface Treatment and External Coating

Marking, Traceability and Material Certificates
Marking can include manufacturer, material standard, grade, SMLS manufacturing designation, NPS or OD, wall thickness or schedule, heat number, length and project information.
