Customization Diameter, wall, radius, center-to-end dimension, tangent, material, bevel, coating, marking, inspection and packing

Pressure-rating note: a butt weld elbow is not normally ordered with a flange-style pressure Class. Its allowable pressure-temperature rating depends on material, wall thickness, dimensions, service conditions and the governing piping code. State the matching pipe schedule and design conditions. Forged socket weld and threaded fittings use the Class system defined by their applicable standard.

Long Radius vs Short Radius 90 Degree Elbow

Selection 90° Long Radius Elbow 90° Short Radius Elbow
Nominal centerline radius 1.5D 1D
Installation space Requires more center-to-end space More compact piping layout
Flow transition Gentler directional change and generally lower local loss Sharper turn with generally higher local loss and turbulence
Typical selection Process piping, pump systems, steam, oil and gas, slurry and general industrial service Restricted spaces where design permits the tighter turn
Engineering check Confirm dimensions, stress and service requirements Review pressure loss, erosion, vibration, pigging and solids handling more carefully

The piping designer should select LR or SR according to available space, allowable pressure drop, flow velocity, erosion risk, cleaning/pigging requirements and piping stress analysis. A short-radius elbow should not be substituted for a long-radius elbow without approval.

Butt Weld, Socket Weld and Threaded Elbows

Elbow Type Typical Standard Specification Method Typical Application

Materials and ASTM Grades

Material Group Common Butt Weld Grades Common Forged Grades Typical Selection Notes
Carbon Steel ASTM A234 WPB, WPC ASTM A105 Water, oil, gas, steam and general process piping within approved temperature limits
Low-Temperature Carbon Steel ASTM A420 WPL6 and other specified grades ASTM A350 LF2 State minimum design-metal temperature and required impact-test temperature
Alloy Steel ASTM A234 WP1, WP5, WP9, WP11, WP22, WP91 ASTM A182 F1, F5, F9, F11, F22, F91 Selected high-temperature and power piping; grade, class, heat treatment and NDE are important
Austenitic Stainless Steel ASTM A403 WP304/304L, WP316/316L, WP321 ASTM A182 F304/F304L, F316/F316L, F321 Review actual medium, chloride concentration, temperature, cleaning and corrosion conditions
Duplex / Super Duplex ASTM A815 grades based on S31803/S32205 or S32750 ASTM A182 F51, F53 or F55 Heat treatment, ferrite balance, corrosion service and welding requirements need project review
GB / EN / JIS Materials 20#, Q345/16Mn, stainless grades and approved equivalents According to the specified product standard No equivalent grade should be substituted without purchaser approval and comparison of chemistry, properties and heat treatment

Material designation must be complete: descriptions such as “P11,” “304,” “316” or “carbon steel” may not fully define a pressure-piping elbow. State the fitting material standard and grade—for example ASTM A234 WP11 or ASTM A403 WP316L—together with construction class where applicable.

Reference dimensions are not fabrication-release data. Confirm all dimensions, tolerances, wall thickness, bevel and construction against the specified standard edition and approved purchase documents. Large sizes from NPS 26 through NPS 48 and all non-standard products are confirmed individually.

Wall Thickness and Welding Ends

The elbow wall must be selected to match the piping design. One nominal size can have many schedules, and the finished elbow must meet the applicable minimum wall requirement after forming. Common options include SCH 5S, 10S, 40S and 80S for stainless steel and SCH 20, STD, 40, XS, 80, 120, 160 and XXS for carbon or alloy steel, subject to size and material availability.

  • Butt weld bevel: prepared according to the specified welding-end standard, wall thickness and welding procedure.
  • Heavy-wall transition: internal taper or transition machining can be evaluated according to an approved detail.
  • Forming thinning: controlled and inspected against the applicable product specification and purchase requirements.
  • Corrosion allowance: must be specified by the piping designer and is not automatically included in the schedule.
  • Tangent ends: straight extensions and unequal tangent lengths can be manufactured to an approved drawing.

Large-Diameter and Custom 90 Degree Elbows

Large 90 degree elbows can be manufactured for water transmission, cooling-water systems, power stations, petrochemical units, mining pipelines, industrial exhaust and process piping. Standard dimensional coverage does not mean every size/material/wall combination is automatically available. Manufacturing feasibility depends on forming capacity, starting material, seam arrangement, heat treatment, mechanical properties and required NDE.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a 90 degree pipe elbow used for?

It changes the direction of a pipeline by 90 degrees and is one of the most common fittings used in industrial fluid systems.

What is the difference between a 90° LR and SR elbow?

A long-radius elbow has a nominal centerline radius of 1.5D and generally provides a gentler turn. A short-radius elbow has a 1D radius and occupies less space but generally creates greater local pressure loss and turbulence.

Does an ASME B16.9 butt weld elbow have Class 150 or Class 300?

It is normally specified by material and wall thickness or schedule, not by a flange-style Class. The complete piping design determines its allowable pressure-temperature rating.

What is the difference between seamless and welded elbows?

A seamless elbow is formed from seamless starting material. A welded elbow contains an approved weld from the starting material or manufacturing route. The permitted class and NDE depend on material specification, size and project requirements.

Can you supply ASTM A234 WP11 and WP22 elbows?

Yes. The inquiry should state grade, class, wall thickness, heat treatment, hardness, mechanical testing, NDE and documentation requirements.

Can large-diameter 90 degree elbows be customized?

Yes. Applicable ASME B16.9 elbows can be evaluated through NPS 48/DN1200. Larger diameters, special radii, tangent ends and non-standard walls can be manufactured according to an approved project drawing and inspection plan.

Can you manufacture according to our drawing?

Yes. Provide OD, wall, angle, radius, center-to-end, tangent lengths, end geometry, material, tolerance and inspection requirements.

What information is needed for quotation?

Send quantity, size, LR/SR, wall or class, material grade, connection, standard, pressure, temperature, medium, coating, tests, certificates and drawings where applicable.
